Are Your Web Browser Plugins Safe? This Page Tells You

first_imgRelated Posts Mozilla, the organization behind the Firefox web browser, introduced a “plugin checker” page last fall that analyzed whether the plugins you had installed in your web browser were up to date. Now that tool has been updated to check plugins installed in other web browsers too, including Safari, Chrome, Opera and Internet Explorer. According to the Director of Firefox Development, Johnathan Nightingale, plugin safety is an issue across the web. “Outdated plugins are a major source of security and stability risk for web users,” he wrote in a recent company blog post. Plugin Safety MattersNightingale says that some studies have shown that the number of users running outdated plugins in their web browser is as high as 80%. However, the plugin checking mechanism built into the latest builds of the Firefox web browser keeps its users better secured as it will prompt you to update your plugins when new ones become available. He notes that over 60% of Firefox users visiting the plugin checker page were running the most recent version of the Adobe Flash plugin, a plugin that’s a popular target for attackers looking to exploit security vulnerabilities in the browser. When including users with either the latest version of the Flash plugin or the second most recent, the number was 75%, much higher than the rest of the web as a whole. Beyond Firefox: Plugin Safety for All BrowsersBut plugin safety isn’t just an issue for Firefox users. All web surfers who use plugins can be affected by security issues. And most do have plugins, even if they don’t realize it. Mainstream users may not understand that clicking “install Flash” to watch a web video means they’ve installed a browser plugin, but that’s exactly what they just did. And now in Google Chrome, the new web browser from the Internet Search giant, the Adobe Flash plugin will come pre-installed with the browser itself. To help address the issues of plugin safety outside the Firefox ecosystem, Mozilla has updated their plugin safety page to work with a number of other web browsers, including Safari 4, Chrome 4 and Opera 10.5. It also checks the safety levels of the most popular plugins for Internet Explorer 7 and 8. Sri Lanka govt issues advisory to its citizens against visiting Tamil Nadu

first_imgAs Jayalalithaa toughens her anti-Sri Lanka stance, the Sri Lankan government has now issued a travel advisory to all its citizens cautioning them from visiting Tamil Nadu. The travel advisory comes in the backdrop of an attack on Sri Lankan pilgrims who were assaulted while on a trip to a church in Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. Following the incident about 180 Sri Lankan pilgrims have returned home. The move by the Sri Lnakan government comes barely a day after reinforcing her anti-Sri Lankan stance, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa ordered the return of two football teams from the island nation that are in the city to play friendly matches.Jayalalithaa also cancelled all football matches involving Sri Lankan players in the state. She also ordered the suspension of the stadium officer at the Nehru Stadium here for allowing the football team from Royal College of Colombo to play a friendly match against the Chennai Customs football team Friday.Condemning the central government for permitting Sri Lankan football teams to come to India to enhance their skills, Jayalalithaa said: “Such an action is an insult to the people of Tamil Nadu.”According to her, the management of Royal College of Colombo (RCC) contacted an official of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) here to organise a friendly football match with the teams here. The RBI official facilitated such a match and the Sri Lankan team came here Thursday and played the match Friday at the Nehru stadium. She said the stadium officer permitted the match on an oral request from the RBI official.”The stadium officer has no power to permit any match at the Nehru Stadium. The stadium officer has demeaned the sentiments of the Tamil people by exercising an authority that he does not have,” Jayalaltihaa said. The other football team from Sri Lanka is from Hilborn International School comprising of eight players and a coach who are here to play a match against Velammal International School. The Sri Lankan government has advised its citizens not to travel to Tamil Nadu after Lankan pilgrims, visiting a church in Thanjavur in the state, were allegedly harassed. Quebec party leaders head to Gatineau to survey tornadodamaged areas

first_imgMONTREAL – Quebec’s political party leaders set their political differences aside on Saturday as they headed to Gatineau, Que., to survey the damage from a tornado that ripped through homes and sent several people to hospital on Friday night. On Day 31 of the election campaign, Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard, the Coalition Avenir Quebec’s Francois Legault, Parti Quebecois Leader Jean-Francois Lisee and Quebec solidaire co-spokesperson Manon Masse all cancelled scheduled activities to meet those affected by the storm.Couillard and Lisee could been seen walking side-by-side as they toured a neighbourhood in Gatineau alongside Mayor Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin and a number of other officials. The two leaders passed by ripped-off roofs, chunks of insulation and flattened cars as they surveyed one of the worst-hit streets in the Mont-Blanc neighbourhood, before meeting with tornado victims at a local school.“It’s like life just stopped,” Couillard said as he looked at a roofless house, with furniture still visible intact in the living room.“It’s a miracle people got out of there alive.”Couillard, the current premier, announced $1 million in emergency aid would be handed over to the Red Cross to help victims who couldn’t return to their homes.“What we announced this morning is for Gatineau but also for the rural areas around the city,” he said.“It’s to help people, through the Red Cross, to meet their daily needs for several weeks and even more, if needed.”Lisee, for his part, said he was relieved nobody had been killed.“As the premier said, it’s extraordinary that there was no loss of life,” he said. “We’re fortunate in our misfortune, but we have to support these people, who come from modest means and have lost everything.”Legault said Saturday morning that he was keeping a scheduled meeting with a group of mayors north of Montreal but had cancelled an afternoon appearance to head to Gatineau.Speaking north of Montreal in Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, he said it wasn’t a day to play politics.“I think it’s important that all the parties show their solidarity, support the premier and reassure the population, because there are people who have lost a lot materially and will need to be reimbursed if they’re not insured,” he said.Legault said the Quebec government would be there to help the victims, no matter who was elected, and encouraged people to donate to help recovery efforts.Legault and Masse also set partisan politics aside as they jointly met with tornado victims and spoke with Gatineau’s mayor.“In Quebec, we help each other, we hold each other up and take care of each other; it’s what we’ve always done,” Masse wrote on Twitter earlier in the day.For the most part, the leaders ditched the official trappings of their campaigns as they expressed solidarity for the victims.Couillard announced Friday night that he would suspend his campaign and leave his electoral bus behind in order to visit storm-damaged areas in his role as premier.Legault also said he would travel to Gatineau in a private vehicle, while Lisee said he was acting as head of Quebec’s official Opposition for the day. Both Lisee and Couillard were expected to head back to Montreal at the end of the day in order to restart their campaigns.— With files from Melanie Marquis, Stephanie Marin and Mylene Crete in Gatineau, Que.Note to readers: This is a corrected version. Jim Prentice remembered as straight shooter who wanted to get things done

He was a guy that got things done, he didn’t mince words. Sometimes he got himself in trouble being too honest, but I think that clearly he was somebody that had good intentions and wanted to get things done.”Nelson said Prentice was someone who respected the handshake and was true to his word.Prentice converted 74.8 acres to reserve lands under the treaty land entitlement process for Roseau River in just six weeks, said Nelson.“We shook hands and sure enough, it was done,” said Nelson. “He was a really good man. My condolences to his family. I want his family to know I really appreciated his work.”Prentice’s family released a statement saying the father-in-law of one of his daughters was also killed in the plane crash.“Words cannot begin to express our profound shock and heartbreak at the news that our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Jim, has died in this tragic event,” said the statement. “In addition, another member of our family was also on the plane, Ken Gellatly, the father-in-law of one of our daughters, also a very special man. To lose two family members at once is unbelievably painful and we are certain you will appreciate and respect our wishes for privacy at this time and the coming weeks.”Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters he learned with “shock and sadness” of Prentice’s death.“Jim was a man who brought his deep convictions to everything he turned his hand to,” said Trudeau. “He was highly respected and well liked in the House of Commons across all party lines….I greatly enjoyed my interactions with Jim….I will miss him profoundly.”Trudeau praised Prentice for his role in helping to finalize the multi-billion dollar Indian residential school settlement agreement.Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, who was a regional chief for the Assembly of First Nations, tweeted her condolences to Prentice`s family.“Very saddened to hear the news of the tragic death of Jim Prentice,” tweeted Wilson-Raybould. “My thoughts are prayers go out to his family.”Very saddened to hear news of the tragic death of Jim Prentice. RIP.— Jody Wilson-Raybould (@Puglaas) October 14, 2016One of Prentice’s crowning achievements as minister of Indian affairs, which is now known as Indigenous affairs, was the creation of the specific claims tribunal. The tribunal, which is still in operation, was created to deal with historical grievances from First Nations over Ottawa’s handling of lands and funds. Prentice announced the creation of the tribunal during a time of heightened tensions between Ottawa and First Nations in 2007.Nelson had called for a day of action for June 29 that year and it led to a shutdown of Hwy 401 for 11 hours by the Mohawks from Tyendinaga. The Caledonia crisis also exploded while Prentice was Indian affairs minister. The crisis began after Six Nations reclaimed territory that was being turned into a housing development.Prentice, who served as federal environment minister from Oct. 30, 2008, to Nov. 4, 2010, was also hailed for rejecting Taseko Mine’s proposed Prosperity gold and copper mine which threatened Fish Lake, which was sacred to the Tsilhqot’in nation in British Columbia. It was one of Prentice’s last acts as environment minister.Prentice’s last role in public office was as Alberta premier from 2014 to 2015. Kyle Lowry Could Make Toronto An NBA Finals Dark Horse

It’s likely no coincidence that Toronto’s opponents are scoring at a rate of nearly 4 fewer points per 100 possessions with Lowry on the court than they did a season ago. In fact, Lowry’s rehabilitation has been so complete that the Raptors now rank among the league’s top 10 teams at both ends of the floor and he has risen to full-blown MVP candidate status. You’re only as good as your best playerIt’s no secret that there’s a distinct relationship between a team’s championship probability and the quality of its best player, but it takes a truly exceptional player to make a run at a title. In the past, Lowry hasn’t been good enough to move that needle, but this season’s version is inching into the territory where small individual improvements can drastically upgrade a team’s chances of winning a championship. We’d expect a team being led by Lowry at his previous career-high BPM of +5.9 to win the title about 5 percent of the time; at this season’s +7.2 mark, those odds are doubled, to 10 percent. (Not even Carter in his prime led Toronto with a BPM so high.) Add in a decent supporting cast — and it’s debatable as to whether Toronto has one of those, particularly with DeMarre Carroll on ice, but let’s entertain the notion anyway — and suddenly the idea of a championship parade down Bay Street doesn’t seem quite so pie-in-the-sky. By just about any measure, the last three seasons have been the best time to root for the Toronto Raptors in their 20-year history. The Vince Carter era was thrilling but brief, and Chris Bosh’s dinos never quite realized their potential. Since 2013-14, however, the Raptors’ winning percentage has hovered around 60 percent, and their efficiency differential has been roughly 3.5 points per 100 possessions — numbers that those previous runs only approached in spurts. For all that success, however, Toronto has had trouble making any kind of dent come playoff time. As my ESPN colleague Zach Lowe wrote about Tuesday, each of the team’s past two postseasons ended with a first-round exit, and although the Raptors were upset both times — implying they had the talent to potentially go further — 49-win teams don’t typically vie for NBA championships anyway.1There are rare exceptions, but even conditional on making it past the first round of the playoffs, only 13 percent of teams that won 48 to 50 games in a season went on to the NBA Finals. If this season’s version of the club is basically the same, expecting different results would be irrational. These Raptors, however, have a secret weapon that their predecessors lacked: skinny Kyle Lowry.Technically speaking, this is Lowry’s fourth season with Toronto; he even logged the second-most minutes of any Raptor during the failed playoff runs of 2014 and 2015. But that version of Lowry was — how can we say it? — less svelte, and far less productive. By Box Plus/Minus (BPM), Lowry’s 2014-15 season was the worst he’d had in four years. This season, though, Lowry profiles like a top-five player according to the advanced metrics. And his sudden improvement could finally give Toronto the star power necessary to truly compete for a championship.Lowry’s evolving gameBefore this season, Lowry appeared to be on an evolutionary arc many players go through, trading a higher usage rate for less efficient scoring. In his rise as one of the game’s best guards, he’d once ranked in at least the 70th percentile of NBA players in both true shooting percentage and usage. That isn’t an easy thing to do. But last season, Lowry seemed to have surpassed the workload at which he could maintain a reasonable level of efficiency — a situation exacerbated by the banged-up state he found himself in as the season progressed. As a result, his offensive numbers dipped: He settled for more midrange shots and drew fewer fouls; he ran the pick-and-roll less often (and less efficiently); and over the course of the season, he struggled with his jump shot in a way he hadn’t for years.Although Lowry was pretty clearly not being himself, the Raptors won the Atlantic Division and locked up the No. 4 seed in the East. But the team was also unceremoniously swept by Washington, a series in which Lowry kept a high usage but saw his efficiency completely collapse. This seemed like a bad sign.Perhaps even more troubling, it was getting harder to find evidence that Lowry — a player with a good two-way reputation — was still among the league’s best defensive guards. Going into last season, he’d ranked up around the 80th percentile of NBA guards in defensive BPM over his career — a ranking corroborated by play-by-play plus/minus metrics and tracking data from Synergy Sports Technology — numbers underpinned by smart, bruising pick-and-roll defense. But in 2014-15, Lowry’s defensive indicators offered mixed messages. Although he still gave the Raptors’ defense a boost while on the floor, the team was also significantly worse defensively than it had been the previous season, and Lowry often looked slow, clunky and, at times, indifferent when trying to fight through ball screens. This season, Lowry has made course corrections at both ends of the floor. Although his usage continues to grow, his scoring efficiency has bounced back, in part because of smarter shot selection. He’s once again devoting fewer shots to the midrange, allowing his rates of taking threes and drawing fouls to return to their historical norms, and he’s been faster and more aggressive in the transition game as well. On defense, you can really see the effects of Lowry’s offseason weight loss. Last season, Lowry frequently failed when trying to use his strength to fight through screens (both on the ball and off), ceded too many easy buckets on pick-and-rolls and was generally slow to recover when he guessed wrong or his gambles didn’t pay off.2014-15: So this season should be encouraging for Raptors fans, at least by this metric. But after years of watching Chris Paul-led teams underachieve in the playoffs, it’s fair to ask whether this algorithm oversells the title chances for a point guard-driven squad. And as it happens, controlling for the entire skill set of a team’s best player, we found a slight tendency for teams led by players with a lot of value tied up in passing to perform worse in the postseason than we’d expect from their BPM. This could be due to any number of causes — from defenses keying in on passing patterns in a long playoff series to the way a playmaker’s value is only maximized when complemented by other skills (or perhaps it’s just random noise) — but it’s one (albeit minor) reason to consider lowering expectations for Lowry.Except that this season, Lowry’s game has been extremely well-rounded — he ranks in at least the 78th percentile of all NBA players in scoring efficiency, possession usage, assist rate and defensive BPM. Historically, teams whose best players excel in the first and last of those categories tend to exceed expectations in the playoffs at a rate far greater than any penalty that’s levied against passers.Of course, all of this presumes that Lowry’s overhauled game is legit. He’s currently 29 years old, an age at which NBA players are typically already on the downside of their careers, not metamorphosing into championship-caliber stars. Also, there was little in Lowry’s preseason CARMELO projection (our statistical crystal ball for NBA careers) to suggest an imminent breakout, aside from the late-blooming presence of Steve Nash on the fringe of his comparables list. An optimistic look at his strongest CARMELO comps suggested that he might pull a Rod Strickland and stay productive into his mid-30s; a less rosy one saw the possibility of flaming out far sooner, like Michael Adams and Derek Harper. So it’s entirely possible that Lowry will regress toward his previous career norms in the season’s second half. But given the particulars of Lowry’s skill set, and the ways in which he’s corrected his deficiencies of a season ago, it’s also very possible that if his caloric intake doesn’t regress, neither will his output. The question of whether Lowry’s teammates are good enough to support a championship run is still very much open. And even if they are, Lowry may have timed his improvement poorly, elevating his play during a season with two abnormally dominant teams that are soaking up all the league’s title odds. But Lowry’s sudden upgrade to the NBA’s elite class of players gives the Raptors a superstar the likes of which they’ve never had before. At the very least, they now possess a crucial element that was missing from the team’s recent string of good-but-not-good-enough campaigns. The new, slimmed-down version of Lowry has been quicker afoot and more focused in his pursuit of ballhandlers around and through screens, forcing more turnovers and fouling less as a result.2015-16: read more
