South African-based paper producer Mondi is expanding its international presence following its listing on the JSE at the beginning of the month, announcing a €525-million (about R5.1-billion) project to modernise and expand the pulp and paper mill in Syktyvkar, Russia. All main equipment contracts have been agreed and construction is to commence in April 2008, with completion scheduled by the end of 2010,” the company said in a statement issued last week. “The project will enhance Syktyvkar’s low cost position, with the additional volume of uncoated fine paper and containerboard being supplied to the high growth domestic Russian market.”Engineering News reported last month that the project involved the construction of new wood-handling facilities, a recovery boiler and turbine, a lime kiln and pulp dryer, as well as upgrades to two chemical pulp lines and improvements to machinery.Mondi chief executive David Hathorn told the publication that it should slash operating costs and improve efficiencies, while also slightly increasing production by 190 000 tonnes per year, 60 000 tonnes of which will be sold into the pulp market, which is being driven by Chinese demand. He added that the modernisation of the plant was probably only the start of the group’s activities in the territory, which is arguably the only major unexploited softwood resource left in the world.“In fact, forests cover more than 70% of the territory, while swamps cover about 15%, making forestry activity attractive but difficult, given swarming mosquitoes and mud in the warmer periods,” Engineering News says. “This means that felling is generally confined to the icy winter months.”The company was spun-off from former parent Anglo American plc in July this year, and has looked at expansion to secure its position as an independent integrated paper and packaging group. Its main interests are in emerging markets, such as South Africa and in various locations in Eastern Europe.According to Mondi, Mondi Business Paper Syktyvkar, with an annual capacity of 580 000 tonnes of paper per year, is one of the largest producers in the Russian pulp and paper industry. In addition, the Syktyvkar mill controls 11 logging companies in the Komi Republic that supply the mill with wood.Mondi Packaging Paper, which operates within the same complex, has an annual capacity of more than 200 000 tonnes of packaging paper, delivering around 60% of the total white top paper market in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

9 June 2014It was agony and ecstasy for the South African women’s team at the Hockey World Cup in The Hague on the weekend as they crushed world number three England 4-1 on Friday before suffering a last-gasp, heart-breaking 3-4 loss to China on Sunday. The weekend began well enough for the South African men’s team, which came within centimetres of beating South Korea from a penalty corner at the end of their contest, but had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Unfortunately, on Sunday it was a different story as the hosts, The Netherlands, blew Fabian Gregory’s charges away, winning 7-1.ImpressiveThe women’s win over England was an impressive outing for coach Giles Bonnet’s team, filled with passionate, hard work, and counter-attacking that tore the English defence apart time and time again.Kathleen Taylor gave South Africa the lead after 17 minutes before Sulette Damons, playing in her 150th test, robbed a defender of the ball and then scored with a superb reverse stick shot to make it 2-0 just before the break. In the second half, Shelley Russell rounded off a superb move with a diving deflection to extend the South African lead to three goals before Dirkie Chamberlain netted South Africa’s fourth in the 52nd minute.England managed a consolation goal from Nicola White three minutes later, but the match ended in a convincing victory for Marsha Cox and her team.‘I am pleased but not surprised’“We worked hard for this result. I am pleased but not surprised by the outcome,” she said after the game.“We started the tournament shakily, but had put a lot of focus on this game even before the World Cup, against an England side that have always given us a tough battle.”ChinaAgainst China, South Africa struggled to get into the game and found themselves two goals behind at the break.Shortly after the restart, however, Kelly Madsen reduced the deficit after being set up by Tarryn Bright.China, though, moved back into a two-goal lead when Wang Na netted after a fine counter-attack. The result seemed done and dusted, but the South Africans were not done.Fight-backBernie Coston struck the post with a shot, but got onto the scoresheet with eight minutes to play after following up on a shot by Taylor.Pietie Coetzee then extended her world record with a 281st goal in her 285th test to make it 3-3.Sadly for the South Africans, there was a late sting in the tail as Mengyu Wang scored from a penalty corner just two minutes from the final whistle to give the Chinese a hard-fought victory.DrawThe South African men had the better of their clash with South Korea on Friday, but Korean keeper Myungho Lee prevented Austin Smith’s team from opening their goal scoring account at the tournament. The Dutch men, backed by a stadium packed with supporters in orange, and coming off a superb 1-0 victory over Olympic champions and arch-rivals Germany, were simply too good for South Africa.Professionals vs amateursThe difference between a professional team and an amateur team, and between the amount of preparation time afforded the two sides for the World Cup, was plain to see as the Dutch romped to victory. They led 4-0 at the break on goals from Seve van Ass, Valentin Verga, Jeroen Hertzberger and Robbert Kemperman and added another Kemperman goal shortly after the restart. Not long after that, Billy Bakker made it 6-0. On the hour, though, Justin Reid-Ross netted a blistering drag flick from a penalty corner to score South Africa’s first goal of the tournament. The Netherlands, however, had the final say when Sander Baart struck their final goal five minutes from time.
South African actor Sello Motloung visited the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg to prepare for his role as Nelson Mandela in an upcoming movie, An Act of Defiance. The focus of the movie is Bram Fischer, the lead attorney for the Rivonia trialists in the 1960s.”There’s no better place to visit for in-depth research on the man and his journey,” said Motloung, following his visit. The foundation gave Motloung access to the audio records of “Speech from the Dock”, which Mandela delivered on 20 April 1964 during the Rivonia Trial. “Mandela’s 176-minute speech opened the defence case in the trial,” said the foundation. The movie is a co-production between South Africa and the Netherlands and is directed by Jean van de Velde. Peter Paul Muller takes the role of Fischer. On MandelaMotloung said he wanted to immerse himself entirely in Mandela’s journey. In doing this, he toured the foundation’s archives and permanent exhibition. It felt like he had visited Mandela himself, said the actor.”I had to suit the images and my dialogue with the life and energy that oozed through the recordings. Clearly, the man was way bigger than what one encounters in the media.”On Fischer“Bram Fischer, a white Afrikaner from powerful Afrikaner parentage, is one of the unsung heroes of the struggle for freedom in South Africa,” said Michael Auret, from production company Spier Films, speaking to movie news website, Screen Daily.”His work at the Rivonia Trial ensured that the leaders of the ANC of the time, including Nelson Mandela, lived to fight another day and ultimately lead a new South Africa.”After the Rivonia Trial, Fischer was also arrested and tried for conspiracy to overthrow the apartheid government. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.“One of those incarcerated with him was Denis Goldberg, the only white person convicted in the Rivonia Trial,” said the foundation. “Because of apartheid, he was not allowed to be held on Robben Island with Mandela and his other comrades.”An Act of Defiance is scheduled for release in March 2017.Source: The Nelson Mandela Foundation and SouthAfrica.info reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? And unlike some other ebook formats, like those designed for Amazon’s Kindle for instance, the so-called “Google editions” will be readable on any device whether that’s a laptop, phone or dedicated eReader. According to news coming out of the Book Fair event, the new digital books program will launch in the first half of 2010 and will offer 400,000 to 600,000 ebooks at that time. Access AnywhereAlthough we already knew that the online store would host books in the cloud, we didn’t know just how that would work. Tom Turvey, Google’s director of strategic partnerships, now explains that the device does not need to be connected to the Internet to read the book after it was accessed once. He also clarified that the company is “not focused on a dedicated eReader or device of any kind.” Instead, consumers would go online one time from their device of choice and afterwards, a cached version of that book would be stored so that it could be read offline at anytime. “As long as you can get onto the library, you can access it,” says Amanda Edmonds, Google’s director of strategic partnerships, who was speaking at O’Reilly’s Tools of Change conference, also being held in Frankfurt at a venue near the Book Fair event. Although not specified, it seems probable that the offline caching done by Google Editions will be made possible via Google Gears, a browser extension that allows website content to be taken offline and then re-synced when an Internet connection returns. Business ModelsAs noted on The Bookseller, a site covering the Tools of Change conference, Google Editions will offer three business models. The first will allow a consumer to purchase the ebook from Google Books, Google’s online collection of digitized books. The second will allow consumers to purchase from a partner retailer and the third would direct consumers to a publisher’s website. In the first route, payments are split 63/37 in the publisher’s favor. If purchasing from a retailer, that split would be 45/55 with the 45% going to the publisher and the retailer splitting the remaining 55% with Google. No decision has been made on the split for the third option, purchases made via a publisher’s own website. Edmonds also noted that these splits are not set in stone just yet – discussions were “just beginning.” In addition, Google may discount books from their list price where permitted, but the discount would be taken from Google’s profits and not anyone else’s. Other news from the O’Reilly event pinned down the launch date of the Google Editions store. It will launch simultaneously in the U.S., U.K., and Europe in June 2010. Google would not give the names of the device manufacturers they intend on partnering with, but Edmonds says she doubts Kindle will be one of them. sarah perez 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market

You can just cut them to the length that you need and work them into your edit, and you’re ready to go.LoopsThe loops allow you to mix and create your own versions of the full track — but at the length and with the customization you want. For instance, if you want one part of the track to play for an extended period of time, and then eventually have everything swell up in a particular moment, the loops are the best tools for the job. Here, you can create your own score.SamplesThe samples are one-hit sounds that you can just throw in at your own discretion. These sounds all stand on their own perfectly well, and you can really use them however you like. They are the sounds from the loops, just non-looping. With these, you can just quickly add a little touch of sound here and there.Looking for more free video production assets?
