Nominations sought for Marshall awards

first_imgNominations are being sought for the annual Gen. George C. Marshall Public Leadership Award and the Marshall Youth Leadership Award.The Fort Vancouver National Trust organizes the awards to honor the service of Gen. George C. Marshall, who lived in Vancouver from 1936 to 1938 as commander of the 5th Infantry Brigade at Vancouver Barracks.Marshall was Army chief of staff during World War II and secretary of state from 1947 to 1949. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the Marshall Plan, which helped rebuild the economies of Europe and the Pacific nations after the war.• A nominee for the adult Marshall Public Leadership Award must be a county resident, 35 or younger, with a four-year college degree. Nominees must demonstrate leadership, commitment to public service and academic achievement, and potential for a role in public service.The award includes $2,200 for a trip to the Marshall Foundation in Lexington, Va.; Colonial Williamsburg; and Washington, D.C.• A nominee for the Marshall Youth Leadership Award must be a county resident in the 12th grade. Selection is based on activities and projects demonstrating the values represented by Marshall.The award includes a $2,500 college scholarship and a $500 summer internship in the Trust’s Celebrate Freedom office.Award recipients will be honored at a dinner on March 26 at the Hilton Vancouver Washington.Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Jan. 31.
