BYU Men’s Basketball Seeks To Surf Past Waves Thursday

first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPROVO, Utah-Thursday, BYU men’s basketball (15-7, 4-3 in West Coast Conference play) hosts Pepperdine (11-10, 4-3 in WCC play) for a conference match-up at the Marriott Center.Entering the tilt against the Waves, BYU head coach Mark Pope (15-7, .682 at BYU; 92-63, .594 as a collegiate head coach) is 39-3 (.929) at home over the course of the last three seasons at both BYU and nearby Utah Valley.The Cougars currently score 78.6 points per game, ranking BYU 28th nationally in scoring offense.The Cougars have posted 373 assists on the season. This ranks BYU 7th nationally in that statistic.The return of senior forward Yoeli Childs (a team-best 21.2 points and 9.7 rebounds per game as well as a team-best 11 blocked shots) to the lineup has galvanized an already strong Cougars squad.He is assisted by senior guard Jake Toolson (15.6 points, 4.7 rebounds per game) and fellow senior back-court mate TJ Haws (13.8 points per game, team-bests in assists [108] and steals [27]) in carrying the load.BYU surrenders 68.5 points per game, ranking the Cougars 165th nationally in scoring defense.In his second stint at Pepperdine, head coach Lorenzo Romar is currently 27-28 (.491) at the helm at Malibu, Calif. Overall, Romar is 69-72 (.489) at Pepperdine and 418-312 (.573) as a collegiate head coach.Pepperdine scores 77 points per game as the Waves are tied for 54th nationally in scoring offense with East Tennessee State and Toledo.Junior guard Colbey Ross leads Pepperdine in scoring (20 points per game) and assists (155).Also scoring in double figures on-average for the balanced Waves are the Edwards brothers,  redshirt senior forward Kameron Edwards (16.9 points, 7.2 rebounds per game) and sophomore forward Kessler Edwards (13.8 points per game, team-bests in blocked shots [32] and rebounding [7.9 boards per game]) as well as junior guard Skylar Chavez (11.8 points per game).Sophomore guard Darryl Polk Jr. leads Pepperdine in steals with 30.The Waves surrender 76.8 points per game as Pepperdine ranks 326th nationally in scoring defense.The Cougars lead the Waves 12-9 all-time and 7-2 at home.
